The Most Famous Homeschooled Athletes

It’s every kids dream: getting to play sports all day instead of going to school! This list ranks athletes who were homeschooled instead of attending a traditional school. From gold medal-winning Olympians to celebrated surfers and awesome NBA players, many of the world’s best sports stars learned everything they know without stepping foot in a classroom. Some of these athletes were taught by their parents while others enrolled in online homeschool programs or distance learning academies like Laurel Springs. Here, these homeschooled stars are ranked loosely by fame and popularity.

Homeschooling may not be for everyone, but it sure worked for these stars. Maybe it was all the extra time they got to spend practicing or the fact that homeschool curriculum can be done on any schedule. Whatever the case, these athletic wonders became some of the biggest names in sports. Who is the most famous athlete who was homeschooled? Oh, just a guy named Tim Tebow. Ever heard of him?

Tebow is actually the first homeschooled athlete to be nominated for the Heisman Trophy. He said, “A lot of times people have this stereotype of home-schoolers as not very athletic – it’s like, go win a spelling bee or something like that – it’s an honor for me to be the first one to do that.” NBA star Blake Griffin was also homeschooled and taught by his mother from first to eighth grade, before going to high school.

For some, being homeschooled was a necessity required by their intense training schedules. Tennis stars Serena Williams and her sister Venus were both homeschooled by their father Richard Williams. Olympic diver Ariel Rittenhouse was homeschooled. She said, “Diving came first for me. When I moved to Indianapolis to train, the schedule would not allow for me to go to school so I began homeschooling.”
