The rules
Where these rules and the standard game disagree, these win. If you've played beach before, read them anyway — timed rounds, the smaller-team rule and closed-hand tips are ours.
Teams of 6 to 8
The league builds the teams — fair on boys and girls, numbers and divisions — and tries to put you with the people you asked for, but it isn't a promise. Once teams are announced, you're on yours: no switching.
Timed rounds
Each round is a timed speed round: one game, one running score, no sets. Both teams play the same number on the court — if one team has 4 there, both play 4. At the end whistle the rally finishes and more points wins; a tie goes to one more rally.
After every game
Report your team's score to the Head Score Keeper — you get 2–3 minutes between rounds to report it and get to your court. Every team plays the same number of games; Juniors play round robin. Your place: most wins, then point difference, then head-to-head.
How we play
Everybody serves — you rotate, always, and nobody skips a turn. Tips with a closed hand only. Honor system for reffing — or ask somebody on the sidelines to work lines and ref.
Be at your court when the horn blows
Know where you are for your next game. If your team isn't at its court when the horn blows, your opponents get an automatic win and 25 points. Not playing? Stay courtside and cheer on the other teams — DO NOT WANDER OFF.
Everybody sets up. Everybody takes down.
Every player is on the crew — carry a net, and don't disappear after the last point. Honor Christ, have fun, honor your families, and represent WCI well.
How the game runs
Rotation and the serve
Players rotate clockwise, and the player who lands in the back right corner serves. No line-up sheets and no numbers on shirts — just keep the order you started in.
Three touches
Three touches to send it back, and you can play the ball with any part of your body — hands, arms, legs, feet.
Setting and hand plays
Both beach and indoor hand-setting are fine, and open-hand plays are allowed on the first pass and on the attack. The one exception is the tip — closed hand only (see the rules above).
